The 6-step career switch plan I used (and teach)
Most career-change advice is romantic nonsense. "Follow your passion" doesn't pay rent in Dubai or Mumbai. Here's the actual sequence that worked for me and the students I've coached through it.
Step 1: Diagnose the real problem (Week 1-2)
Write down WHY you want to leave. Is it the money, the boss, the industry, or the work itself? If it's the boss, you don't need a career switch — you need a new employer. According to Harvard Business Review, 70% of "career change" desires are actually "manager change" desires in disguise.
Step 2: Validate the new path with a paid project (Month 1-3)
Before you announce anything, get paid once in the new field. One client, one course sale, one freelance gig. If you can't get paid for it as a side hustle, you won't survive doing it full-time.
Step 3: Build a 12-month financial runway (Month 1-6)
Save 12 months of expenses minimum. In Dubai that means AED 120,000-180,000 for a single professional. Career transitions take longer than you plan — I budgeted 6 months, it took 14.
Step 4: Build the new skill stack in public (Month 3-9)
Post your learning journey on LinkedIn. I built my education brand by sharing what I was learning about funnels, AI, and digital marketing — before I had any students. Audience first, product second.
Step 5: Stack income before you cut income (Month 6-12)
Your side income should hit 50% of your day-job income before you quit. Not aspirational. Actual deposits.
Step 6: Make the cut with a 90-day plan (Month 12+)
